The distant hooting of an owl echoed from across the river, well, that's where the kit guessed it must be from, but it didn't help the already ire feel to the night. A light breeze rustled the leaves of the willows, chilling the air, a thin clouds covered the moon and most of the night stars. The night wasn't cold, no, it was far from that, if anything it was warm, but that didn't seem to help much for the young she-cat who sat just outside the nursery entrance, her tan and white pelt whipped by the wind and loose branches from the entrance. She was crouched against the slightly damp ground, her tail wrapped around her small body, as if she was trying to keep warm, but really, she was just thinking, just sort of, living by the moment, as some would put it. It was these quiet moments that seemed to bring light that the young she-car wasn't a kit any more, even though her name kept that as a bit of a curse.
As far as Cougarkit was concerned, she was six moons and should rightfully be an apprentice, but for some reason, she was still living in the nursery with Onyxkit, and that didn't seem like it was likely to change. It wasn't like the clan had forgotten about them, no, they made enough racket and made their presence known enough that it was impossible to forget they were there, but that still didn't help the situation. She couldn't understand it though, and if this she-cat didn't understand something, it made her frustrated as hell, and finding out about this particular question wasn't exactly polite. But maybe that's what she needed to do, be right out there and bold, show she was ready, even if Onyxkit wasn't, but even her quiet brother she was sure was ready for the next stage in their life.
She knew she really shouldn't be out of the nursery at this time of night, but she couldn't sleep with those strange dreams haunting her sleep and with her own questions constantly stirring her conscious. She had been told by Undergrowthfang himself, even if it was just by looks, that these dreams weren't common, but still, she put it down to too vivid imagination and dedication to elders stories, and that was the story she was sticking to. Lying there outside the nursery, Cougarkit rested her paws out in front of her and her head on top of them, closing her bright caramel eyes for a few moments, hoping that maybe for the first time in a moon, she could find some sleep in the haunting silence of night.

Darkness had long since gripped the forest, it's chilling breeze shoving the trees two and fro, as well as the young she-cat who paced towards RiverClan camp. Her silver tabby fur tousled in every which way; that she was goaded was very much an understatement. She couldn't believe that she let that... that... uncouth and... demanding white warrior put her paws all over her! Minnowpaw let out a frustrated hiss, and she knew that she was really hissing at nothing, but in the depths of her mind she was snarling, just before she tore the throat out of Mutefang with her own claws. All she'd been doing was exploring, it wasn't like she was really trying to take anything, or steal or invade. She wouldn't have left scent markers or took their prey... she didn't understand why they responded with violence.
Did Minnowpaw look intimidating? She snorted, but thought better of replying to her own mental question. She knew she didn't look daunting at all, if anything, she looked sweet and timid. Another grunt hit the atmosphere. Right, I know I'm neither of those.
It was already that she found she hated WindClan, but she wondered just how much RiverClan would counter if it had been the other way around. If a WindClan apprentice had been the intruder. Then she was angry that Ravenwing and Otterheart had done nothing to help her! She'd been practically blasted to hell by the white she-cat, and she had nobody to help her but herself. Her instincts and her lack of experience. Wow, great. Thanks guys. As her lithe form glided into camp like a polished shadow, she instantly noticed a smaller form, creamy, lingering outside of the Nursery. Ears pricked, she changed course and made a slow and curious beeline for Cougarkit. Her friend who hadn't become an apprentice yet... sympathy clouded her pretty and unique gaze. But only the light of the moon reached her paler, more violet blue eye.
"Cougarkit?" She called, concerned. "Are you okay?" She looked like she was asleep, but if she was, why wasn't she in the Nursery where it was both warm and safe? Minnowpaw had forgotten entirely about her troubles, she was only bothered by Cougarkit now, her maternal and friendly instincts kicking in.

This was impossible. Which was saying a lot because this she-cat didn't like or commonly use that word. If she hadn't been half awake, she might not have heard the soft paw-steps before a familiar voice called out, but she did, and by the time Minnowpaw's voice reached her ears, she'd liftedher head, caramel bown meeting violet and blue. "Cougarkit? Are you okay?" Looking at her friend, she gave a snortas the reminding thoughts about why she was thee came back to her slightly sleep deprived mind. "Yeah, I'm just great. Y'know, 'cause being stuck in a den all day is great fun,' she meowed dryly, her ears flicking back to press against her skull for a moment before she lifted them back up again slightly. "Just can't sleep in that noisy den." Well she wasn't lying. Onyxkit had started snoring and the other cats in there weren't exactly quiet sleepers either. Not that she knew if they disturbed her or not.
Twitching her whiskering, the kit studied the apprentice before her for a moment, noticing the slightly ruffled appearance of the she-cat's fur, and a wave of irritation rushed through her. Minnowpaw had probably been out doing something interesting, instead of being stuck in the stuffy old camp. But at this hour, it only brought more questions to mind. Shoving her own worried to the back of her mind, she tried to focus on Minnowpaw, seeing as she was there and the only cat who seemed up in the dead of night to chat with. "What were you doing out of camp at this time?" She asked, trying to control herself from asking more than one question at a time. Her curiousity was something she was always told to watch as it was going to get her in trouble, but like she was going to listen to those grumpy warriors, you only learned anything by asking questions and making mistakes. Well that was what she believed anyways.
Shifting slightly into a sitting position, the lean she-cat gazed curiously at the tabby she-cat. The two had formed a friendship rather recently, and really, it was only having the older cat to ask all her questions to that kept her sanity this last moon, and really, she was secretly hoping that when she became an apprentice, Minnowpaw wouldn't just fade away into the rest of the clan's cats. She liked the she-cat and it really would be a shame. But of course, with a curious twinle in her gaze, she refused to accept that was going to happen, and if it did, she wasn't going to think about it till the time came.

When Cougarkit moved, creamy eyes opening, Minnowpaw let out a sigh of relief. That didn't help ease her curiosity though, or her anxiety as to why the she-cat was outside the warm den at this hour. The silver tabby drew closer to stand directly in front of her friend; she tried to make out the emotion in her gaze, but the shadows of the night turned the caramel depths a darker hue. Yeah, I'm just great. Y'know, 'cause being stuck in a den all day is great fun, She hadn't missed the edge to her reply, and Minnowpaw could sympathize with her. She remembered being a kit, not too long ago actually. Always wanting something more, wanting some fight here and there, some hunting and some respect. Being kit was the worst of all things, you could only sit and wait. Wondering what your future would untie to be... A sigh escaped her as Cougarkits ears flattened. Just can't sleep in that noisy den. "I know how that was," she mumbled, reminded of the days when the kits never wanted to sleep, only play like dogs, wrestling and snapping their tiny jaws in an attempt to look fierce.
If Cougarkit recalled as well, Minnowpaw had been a kit along with her. Just a moon or so older; that was why she moved on to become an apprentice, leaving Cougarkit and her dark brother behind... They'll catch up. The thought was warm, and she smiled unintentionally. She had never felt envy or jealousy, she only wanted to do better and be the best she could. If Cougarkit became a better warrior or apprentice, Minnowpaw was sure she would only be happy for her kithood friend. There was a prolonged silence that stretched between them, and Minnowpaw couldn't think of anything else to say. She knew their apprentice ceremony was going to be soon, and she wanted to congratulate Cougarkit but she thought better of it. The tan she-kit didn't appear to be in the best of moods. What were you doing out of camp at this time?
Oh, right. The question took Minnowpaw by surprise, not that it had been asked, but because of what had really happened. She didn't want Swishstar to find out and be angry with her! Her expression dampened into a seeming look of dread. Pure dread, and disappointment. I'm still mad that warrior dared touch me! She leaned down after scanning both directions of the clearing- things were soundly. "The border patrol got into a scramble with WindClan..." Instead of being excited, her voice was careful; whispery. She didn't want anyone to hear. However, it would be impossible to miss the tint of regret and horror.
"And I started it."

"I know how that was,"
The tan and white she-cat nodded thoughtfully, her bright gaze still curiously lingering on the tabby she-cat. She seemed surprised about the question, which only made the smaller she-cat shift slightly closer, even more so when the she-cat looked around, almost as if she was scared of others hearing. Looking into the she-cat's oddly matched eyes and seeing dread there, Cougarkit couldn't help but tilt her head to the side slightly, slightly confused as she she-cat softly spoke, her voice filled with dread and horror.
"The border patrol got into a scramble with WindClan... And I started it."
The she-cat's jaw dropped at once and she looked at her good friend with a stunned look. She was upset that she'd done something interesting? She was about to comment on that, but instead thought about it for a moment. A border skirmish wasn't good, and if Minnowpaw had started it, she was going to be in huge trouble, if anyone found out anyways, which they probably would. Looking at her paws for a minute she frowned, her ears flicking against her skull for a few moments before she looked up again and carefully started speaking. "That's not good, even I know that." She meowed, almost thoughtfully before speaking again.
"...Cause anything that happens on a border is bad news. But I still can't understand why you're so upset about it!" Pretty much jumping to her paws, her voice slightly louder than it had been, she gave a snort and shook her head. "That's awesome Minnowpaw. Really, how many cats have the guts to start a fight?" Touching her nose comfortingly to her friends, caramel eyes glinting with curiousity and excitment, she sat back down, ears pricked up fully. "What happened? How did it start? What was it like?" she asked, her strong urge to get out of the camp and meet the real world coming out in a wave of questions toward her friend.

There was an uncomfortable silence that lingered between the two of them; it didn't last long, but it made Minnowpaws fur prickle. What did Cougarkit think? If she knew what was good for anyone, she would scold her and tell her the obvious. (That didn't stop Minnowpaw from trying to figure it out herself) The apprentices pretty eyes narrowed tightly as she tried to look into the tan she-kits mind, doubtfully she'd find something, but there was a chance she could read some small flicker of emotion of her friends face, right? She wasn't patient enough to wait for an answer, as if it even mattered, Cougarkit answered soon enough. That's not good, even I know that. It was a terrible first statement, but bluntly said. At least she was honest, of all things. She'd hoped she wouldn't get caught or in trouble, but that was unlikely. She was bound to be ratted out by Ravenwing or Otterheart, and then she'd be on thin ice. Especially with Sedgeheart... StarClan knows he would be very disappointed...
Impressed, nonetheless by Cougarkits boldness and knowledge on given situations like this, Minnowpaw almost smiled. She'd make a good apprentice, with her gradual signs of self-possession... a gleam found its way into the larger she-cats moonstones, proudly, almost... but her gut told her to feel otherwise. She knew Cougarkit very well and she knew that she wouldn't be the one to reprimand, either. She waited slowly but surely for the catch, the one she mentally detested but felt inside of her that she would definitely agree with. ...Cause anything that happens on a border is bad news. But I still can't understand why you're so upset about it! Yep. That one. She sighed but felt the tugs of a chuckle tickle at her throat, and the warmth pull at her chest. Maybe Cougarkit was still a kit, but she really knew how to trigger Minnowpaws optimism.
When they were kits, they would always babble on about their dreams and their life values; what they wanted to be, what they wanted to do and how they would make an impact that would forever leave its mark on RiverClan. Being adventurous was a start, and so was being able to accept your mistakes, and live with them, able to forgive yourself whatever the damage. Blinking, Minnowpaw drew a pace back when Cougarkit bounced to her paws, excitement, as expected, completely seizing her. That's awesome Minnowpaw. Really, how many cats have the guts to start a fight? Yeah, that was true... "Ones that know how to fight, I'm sure." she mumbled in reply. She wouldn't have minded at all showing Mutefang or that snotty WindClan apprentice what she was made of, if only she knew how to fight... She was useless. Battering at Caramelpaws sides like a flailing fish. She was proud that she got away but she was still ashamed that she'd started it and so unjustly. Maybe she really had learned her lesson?
How cruel life is. How little it takes to make you or break you. Luckily, Minnowpaw wasn't one to surrender, and she was still in the making of a fine warrior, her pride, obduracy and liberated all included. Cougarkit bumped her nose to Minnowpaws, a fleeting display of affection for their friendship, What happened? How did it start? What was it like? What did she think it was like? There was blood. The smell of blood still hung in the air, loosely, but she could scent it, and taste its metallic taint on her tongue. She remembered the pain that took her when Mutefang held her down, her claws digging into her sides and chest...
And not knowing what to do didn't help any. She tried to talk her way out of it and it worked, maybe a little. She had no idea, Ravenwing flung herself into the small skirmish before the white warrior had a chance to fall back or kill her. But would she have really?
If Cougarkit wanted a story though, she'd give her a good one at least. On the house.
"It was a regular patrol in the beginning, I was admiring the scenery and the territory, but I couldn't believe how flat WindClans territory was! You should have seen it!" She whispered, her voice on the edge with sudden awe. "It was like all of LionClan had trampled down the trees, and pushed the shrubbery down with the grass, I swear I could have flew over the entire turf to Highstones and back, no questions asked!"
Her eyes were big and round, adding onto the effect her words made. Cougarkit liked stories, surely? Minnowpaw'd learned a thing or two from the elders as well. "I saw a rabbit, and it was a speedy little thing. I thought I'd challenge myself and I went after it. I didn't plan on killing it, but I didn't think I was doing any harm, y'know? I cross the border by accident, and then these WindClan cats were there up on a ravine, and they were watching me. A white one came down, and she was pretty! Her eyes were the color of the sky on a sunny afternoon, but she was mean. She told me to leave or she'd make me, so I took my chances and went for the second option." Shrugging, she sat up straight and drew her tongue over her paw, smoothing down the tousled fur. "She started pushing me with her shoulder, and it was like being hit with rock. Took me by the scruff, I squirmed and got her good on the face. Angrily, she attacked me, pinned me down and that's where Ravenwing came in and flung her to the ground, Otterheart shadowing her." Now she was practically sharing her friends excitement, what wasn't to love about a good fight? The ending had been disappointing but still, it'd been fun while it lasted.
"He dragged me out from under the warrior, and flung me across the border; told me to get some help. Then a little WindClan apprentice got snotty with me, and like I was going to go get help? How cowardly! I told him I didn't want to and then Slatepaw was there! Like, he just comes out of nowhere and backs me up, and then attacks the enemy apprentice! I go to join him, and he's got her on the ground, belly to the sky. I batter about her for a little while, and then Ravenwing calls it off..." She muttered a little irritated. "I could have taken that little twit, but still. I guess StarClan didn't think so."
Guess not.

The expression on Minnowpaw's face just made the whole thing laughable. There was that glint of almost pride, the familiar twinge of optimism and she could see the starts of what could be a laugh. The last thing made her ears flick down for a moment. Was she really that predictable? The tan and white she-cat didn't give herself time to ponder on that as Minnowpaw seemed to go through a range of thoughts, before starting to speak. Yes, she was old enough to be an apprentice, but while still with the name of kit, she was quite happy to act like one. After all, stories like the ones you got told when you were young wouldn't happen much once you ran out of time. Not that she was about to start enjoying her lack of interesting activities.
"It was a regular patrol in the beginning, I was admiring the scenery and the territory, but I couldn't believe how flat WindClans territory was! You should have seen it! It was like all of LionClan had trampled down the trees, and pushed the shrubbery down with the grass, I swear I could have flew over the entire turf to Highstones and back, no questions asked!" A wave of longing rushed through the smaller she-cat as she looked down at her paws, the overwhelming urge to get out of the camp coming back. She wanted to see WindClan for herself! She wanted to see it all without needing all these descriptions! Digging her claws into the ground, she looked back up to listen again. She told me to leave or she'd make me, so I took my chances and went for the second option."
A smirk crossed the she-cat’s face as she gave a wise, approving nod. “You have learned my skills well young one,” she meowed, grinning widely to show she was tease. Of course, it was the younger she-cat that pushed all boundaries to their maximum. "She started pushing me with her shoulder, and it was like being hit with rock. Took me by the scruff, I squirmed and got her good on the face. Angrily, she attacked me, pinned me down and that's where Ravenwing came in and flung her to the ground, Otterheart shadowing her." Bright caramel eyes glittering, the young she-cat listened carefully as Minnowpaw outlined what had happened. It sounded so much more exciting than sitting around the stupid camp! Whiskers twitching, she tried to pay full attention, but it was hard due to the sudden urge to tackle her friend herself.
I batter about her for a little while, and then Ravenwing calls it off..." She could see her friend was irritated about being called off, and although the smaller she-cat was insulted that a warrior would tell someone to go get help, her rational side that had developed after listening to the warriors chat about different things kicked in. Maybe it was for the best. "I could have taken that little twit, but still. I guess StarClan didn't think so."
Cougarkit growled, and shook her head. “You could’ve taken her on! Why didn’t Otterheart just go get help himself!” She was disappointed that other warriors thought so lowly of apprentices, but then again, when she became an apprentice, she was going to show them all what all apprentices could do! Suddenly caught up in the moment, the patched kit suddenly crouched down and launched herself at Minnowpaw, battering at her ears. “You should’ve shown him where he could stick his help!” She meowed fiercely, her bright gaze glinting with amusement. She couldn’t wait till she was an apprentice! She’d show that tom herself! “Hey Minnowpaw! Have you learned any proper battle moves yet?” She asked curiously.

The silver tabby's thoughts drowned out the relapse of the border skirmish, and the images gradually faded away to nothing but wishful thinking. She couldn't realistically see herself standing over a cowering Mutefang; not when she was so puny and small, and don't forget she was only just recently made into an apprentice... Minnowpaw trying to win a fight against a big muscular experienced WindClan warrior was suicide, and it proved nothing. She wasn't cowardly, but logically, it made no sense. Even if she was conceited and had the biggest ego in RiverClan, she didn't know how to fight, and she wasn't strong or grown up enough to be throwing around disputes. She knew for a fact that she would never cross the border knowingly again, and that if she were challenged to fight or leave, she'd take the highroad! It was sad to admit, but her life meant more to her than her pride. If she died, her pride would be meaningless, and so would her being an apprentice training to become a Warrior. For StarClan's sake, if she died, she would never get her claws on her warrior name, ever, that was definite!
She let out a sigh as Cougarkit growled with condemnation. You could’ve taken her on! Why didn’t Otterheart just go get help himself! The apprentice shrugged, no longer bothered by something that had already passed. It had happened hours ago, but it felt like forever. Longer than it should have. Her mind strayed over Caramelpaw, the mean, thingyy apprentice who, despite having known even less than Minnowpaw, dared to underestimate her strength. If it hadn't been for Slatepaw - her heart fluttered - she would have been doomed to take the WindClan apprentice's insults. He'd just slithered out of the undergrowth too, like a knight in shining armor... her mystic blue eyes blinked, bedazzled by the image of the handsome tom. She was too distracted by the reminiscence to notice the creamy kit leaping at her. You should’ve shown him where he could stick his help! The fire in Cougarkits eyes was intense, and it pushed motivation through Minnowpaws veins. Surging, she rolled Cougarkit over, until the kit was on her back instead. She laughed at the irony. Hey Minnowpaw! Have you learned any proper battle moves yet?
The truth hurt. "No." Her voice was a pout, and she moved away from her friend, almost sadly. "Furzeheart insists on teaching me to hunt first. It's such a drag..." Then she rolled her eyes, some sass surfacing, pushing past the mellow phase.

The simple manner which Minowpaw's enthusiasm disappeared worried the young she-cat as she looked up at her friend, who only shrugged at her comments. Refusing to back down and copy her deflation, the young she-cat gave a soft growl, her ears flattening against her head once again as she looked up at the older she-cat. She seemed to be deep in thought, almost pondering on what she'd done, and that alone made the kit sigh. At least she had an event to ponder over. The closest she got were the stories Minnowpaw and some other cats told her, and her nightmares. Those alone were frightening enough, and she wasn't even sure how she could picture all that stuff. Then again, some of the stories were very explicit. When Minnowpaw suddenly seemed to snap out of it, she didn't fight as the he-cat jumped forward and effortlessly it felt like, rolled her onto her back.
Hearing Minnowpaw laugh, she couldn't help but grin playfully at the other she-cat, looking at her upside down face. Oh, she wasn't going to roll over like that without getting back at the other she-cat. It was all in the timing though. "No." She'd almost forgotten about her question, but the she-cat's sulky response made her growl, shaking her head to copy the apprentice's tone. "Furzeheart insists on teaching me to hunt first. It's such a drag..." As Minnowpaw moved away, Cougarkit rolled back onto her belly, looking up at the she-cat who rolled her eyes, again, seeming to have brightened up since that one moments after her story. pulling her legs under her and lifting up her body enough so she was in a crouch, Cougarkit took her friend's momentary distraction as her chance. "Well maybe I can teach you a thing or two!"
Giving a playful growl, the she-cat charged forward, aiming to bowl straight into her best friend. She hadn't been sitting in the camp without any attention. Oh no, a few warriors had paused to show her small things, and now, maybe it was fun and games, but if Minnowpaw didn't know anything, maybe the tables of learning things could be changed, and any opportunity to show-off and beat her friend wouldn't go astray.

She just didn't feel like herself. Being an apprentice was fun, but it wasn't... everything that she'd thought it would be. She pictured different things the night before her ceremony; happy reunions, respect, Clan gossip, enjoyable training, teasing hunting, and… of all things, she had pictured brave and noble fighting. She did not expect to experience a fight so soon, nor did she expect to feel the claws of a cruel WindClan warrior, unjustly unsheathed, digging into her. What had happened between RiverClan and WindClan was wrong on so many levels; and it was just as much her fault as it was theirs. She crossed first. Her, Minnowpaw, had jumped the border recklessly. Was it safe to say, that she honestly, hadn’t expected anything when she intersected just like she hadn’t anticipated being caught? I should have begged her to let me go, The silver tabby thought grimy, maybe then a WindClan apprentice, so much like me, wouldn't have had to suffer on her own territory.
She knew the stories of the war between the two Clans, but being there, tasting the hatred and the tension in the air (so thick she could have cut it with her claw), was aberrant, overwhelming and terrifying all at the same time.
Mystic eyes furrowed in pity as she watched Cougarkit. Was she really so eager to go through with that? Minnowpaw hoped that, when the time came, the tan and white she-kit would find that everything she was looking forward to was nothing but a nightmare. It was a nightmare she would have to live through, think about, dream about, and the proposition of growing up did not come with a gift-wrapped escape. Sympathy engulfed her. In Minnowpaws further contemplation, she was reminded of reality once again by the excited howl of Cougarkit; Well maybe I can teach you a thing or two! She barreled into the apprentice, and both went down on the ground. Suddenly irritated, she shoved the bundle off of her with a single paw. "I've had enough fighting for one day," Exhausted, "I'm going to sleep."
Without glancing at Cougarkit, she slipped silently past, and disappeared into the warm, Apprentices den.
She felt bad for leaving her friend out of the blue, but it was late, she was being consumed by her thoughts, and she knew that she wasn't up to play-fight with the creamy she-cat. Not when she had spent her day clawing up Caramelpaw.
StarClan have mercy.

But tonight, of course that didn't happen. In a way, she should have seen it coming, should have been old enough to tell that games weren't what the she-cat needed right now. But, she was surprised when Minnowpaw roughly shoved the tan and white she-cat off her, clearly irritated. Grunting as she tumbled back onto the slightly soft ground, the kit rolled onto her belly, ears flattening against her head as the tabby she-cat got to her paws. "I've had enough fighting for one day, I'm going to sleep." The she-cat was tempted to spit a retort back at the apprentice, but, after a moment's though, she just let out an irritated huff. She knew Minnowpaw was wound up about this fight, but seriously, couldn't she see that things happened?
Maybe it was a kit's view of the world, where everything was smooth-sailing, happened for a reason. But whatever, clearly her friend couldn't see it the same way. It took her a moment, staring after the tabby, before she slowly pulled herself up to her paws, giving her pelt a hard shake as she did so to try and shake off the strange feeling of neglect that spiked in her fur. It seemed like this was the way things were going to be for them, until she became an apprentice. Right now, they were in two different worlds, didn't see things eye to eye. Lowering her head slightly, nightmares forgotten, Cougarkit gave a small sigh. Why couldn't they be the same age, and experience all of this together? That's not the way the world works, Cougarkit. Shaking her head, the she-cat slowly moved toward the nursery once again.
Like always however, the voices of queens and kits were not welcoming ones, and it was only after pausing at the entrance for a few moments that she slowly moved inside. Who knew? Maybe Onyxkit was wake enough to play fight, even if she knew it wouldn't be the same. She could only hope that things got better, and quickly, before the gap between the two friends got any larger.
