Fortunately, the rain had cleared up that morning, and the sun now peeked out from behind puffy white clouds. Reedfisher felt the warm sun on his pelt as he trotted through the marsh, weaving between pines and ducking under low branches. His bright blue eyes were sparkling that morning - he was excited for today's lesson. His new apprentice, Emberpaw showed immense talent and promise, and he wanted to start working on it before she-cats and friends and family got involved.
As the lanky brown tom slid into the clearing, he noticed several other pairs already training. Feeling slightly annoyed and claustrophobic, Reedfisher nodded to the closest one - Midnighthowl and her apprentice, Maplepaw. "hullo," His voice was, as always, friendly and charming, and yet deep down he felt an inkling of discomfort when looking at the midnight black warrior. Something about her felt off.
Trying to shake that silly feeling, Reedfisher headed to the far corner of the clearing and settled down, watching the others train until his own apprentice showed up. Hopefully, he hadn't forgotten the way to the training hollow already. Maybe today he could show Emberpaw some attack moves, and then they could go and catch some prey before heading back to camp? Reedfisher had a few things up his sleeve that he'd like to teach Emberpaw. His eyes glowed happily - this was the closest thing he had ever had to a son or brother. And he loved every second of it.
[again, short, but it's there. :3]

emberpaw's eyes fluttered open, the fog of sleep slowly drifting away from his head. when the weak sunlight hit his eyes he jumped up in his nest. reedfisher wanted him to meet him at the burnt sycamore to train. quick as lightning he ran out of his den and barged out of the exit. the startled hisses of warriors were muted as he ran through the wet marsh. 'oh, great! as if the marsh isn't wet enough!' the ginger tom thought, still not quite used to the dampness that always seemed to clench his paws.
after a few moments of running emberpaw had to skid to a screeching halt at the burnt tree. so many pairs of mentors and apprentices were also there. 'blimey! how late did i sleep?!' he nodded shyly to the other cats, before smoothing out his fur. when the tom was sure he didn't look like a rogue he looked around for his mentor. it didn't take long to find those blue eyes, and the tom bounded over to reedfisher.
'hi reedfisher,' the tom meowed, not to quietly, 'sorry i'm so late, i don't know why i slept so much. what are we going to do today? i'm so excited, i love training, it's so fun,' the tom said these things very quickly, and he didn't know why he was so hyper today. maybe it was just the thought of spending so much time with reedfisher that made him like this.

A skidding noise accompanied by a slight huffing reached Reedfisher's ears, and the tom turned towards the entrance as his apprentice trotted in, looking winded. His emerald eyes lit up as he spotted his mentor, and Emberpaw bounded over, all enthusiastic and cheerful.
"hi reedfisher! sorry i'm so late, i don't know why i slept so much. what are we going to do today? i'm so excited, i love training, it's so fun!" the apprentice babbled, his eyes shining happily, and Reedfisher could practically feel the energy vibrating off of him in waves. Shaking his head to clear it, the lanky tom cleared his throat, waiting for Emberpaw to stop talking.
"first of all, you're not late," he meowed, his voice hoarse. "they're all early." That was his logic, and it had always worked for him in the past, so why not pass it on to his eager apprentice? "second of all, don't talk so loud. you're hurting my head." He had woken up with a clear head, but had developed a dull ache as the morning passed. He would have to see Brittlebreeze about that.
"finally, we're going to work on battle moves today. nothing too difficult, but just a taste." With that, the tom assumed a defending position, his eyes fixed on Emberpaw's. His muscles were tense and ready for the slightest attack, and his tail flicked gently.
"go on, then." he meowed, waving his tail at Emberpaw. "try me."
[yay.]

'first of all, you're not late, they're all early.' emberpaw grinned, he had never thought of it like that before, 'second of all, don't talk so loud. you're hurting my head.' the young tom instantly felt bad, he hadn't meant to be that loud, and he certainly didn't want to hurt reedfisher. 'finally, we're going to work on battle moves today. nothing too difficult, but just a taste.'
emberpaw let out a very faint gasp of delight. this was his favourite subject in training. it fascinated him so much, the fact that each clan had different fighting skills. he wanted to be able to use them proudly, starclan forbid if they ever get in a fight, but he wanted to be able to defend his clanmates. reedfisher shifted into a defending position, and emberpaw studied it carefully. go on, then. try me.
emberpaw nodded and felt his heart flutter. he had no idea what to do, and he knew that in a real battle he wouldn't have time to think. he tried to remember what reedfisher had done the first day of training. 'he...he surprised me...yes! that's what he did!' now emberpaw just had to figure out how to surprise reedfisher.
the young tom decided he would just try the classic head butt. he began to charge and when he felt as if he was close enough he tipped his head down and closed his eyes. he had no idea what was going to happen now, he just hoped that he wouldn't look like an idiot.

Reedfisher gazed at his apprentice, his heart beating as he anticipated the tom's next move. Would he leap into the air or dive towards his paws? Moons of battle training had prepared him for this moment - not battle, but passing his knowledge on to someone else who would use it as well. It felt amazing.
Lost in his thoughts, Reedfisher didn't notice Emberpaw charging towards him. His pale blue eyes focused on the tom as he was speeding towards him, head bowed, ready to slam into his chest. Reedfisher simply tilted to one side, allowing Emberpaw to trip over his paws as the brown tom got to his. His mouth was quirked in a smile, and he chuckled at his apprentice's enthusiasm. "good, good, that's exactly how i want you to handle every challenge i give you." he meowed in praise, tapping the orange tabby on the shoulder with his long tail. Without warning, Reedfisher spun around and reached for Emberpaw with sheathed claws, ready to smack his large paws down on the apprentice's shoulders to force him down to the ground. Then, he could easily pretend to bite his neck or twist him sideways so that he could claw him. He just hoped that Emberpaw was ready and had a defense mechanism prepared.
[blegh short.]

emberpaw did not feel any collision against his head, he only felt his own paws slipping in the dust. 'good, good, that's exactly how i want you to handle every challenge i give you.' his mentor tapped his tail lightly on emberpaw's shoulder and emberpaw was happy his mentor found praises, even when he failed. a few seconds after emberpaw found his breath, he felt large paws smack him down on the ground.
'woah!' ''woah,'' was all emberpaw could say in the sudden scramble. he was so glad this wasn't real battle, because if it was he would have been reduced to shreds. 'ugh...why does he keep doing this? the tomcat closed his eyes and spat out the dust that was in his mouth. trying to be quick, he pinpointed where reedfisher was on top of him, and decided to roll over.
his weight wouldn't be much help, considering he was still much smaller. but surprise was a great advantage and hopefully reedfisher would losen his clawless grip on him.

Emberpaw gave a small shriek of surprise as Reedfisher slapped his paws down on his fiery shoulders, claws sheathed, of course. The apprentice wriggled and tried to turn over to flip Reedfisher off, and the tabby tom decided to comply, allowing Emberpaw to get a paw in. Rolling over on his back, the tom lay there, blue eyes sparkling as Emberpaw huffed and puffed.
"before you do anything stupid, think about how my position and any weak points that you can target. i'm in a defensive position right now, and i could either throw you off of me or try to claw at your stomach. so try to defend yourself while attacking me." Reedfisher meowed in one breath, leaving himself quite winded. He remembered doing this with his own metor, and smiled briefly. The times had been easy back the, although he wasn't complaining. He loved his life, and enjoyed nearly every moment of it.
Glancing around at the other pairs that were squaring off against each other, the tabby tom felt proud. His Clan was so strong and so brave. They were fearless, and these apprentices would grow up to be strong warriors. He could already feel it.
His blue gaze drifted towards Midnighthowl, lingering on her inky pelt and her glowing eyes. A slight shiver ran up his spine, and he looked away, trying to quell the prick of fear that filled his mind whenever he laid eyes on her. Something was off about the fierce she-cat, but he didn't know what.
Looking once more at his apprentice, Reedfisher threw in some words of encouragement. "don't think too much before you act - just do what feels right."
(sorry it took so long!)

emberpaw clamped his mouth shut tight as he felt reedfisher getting off of him. he breathed through his nose for a while, trying to collect his breath. he was hot and dusty now and was beginning to tire. but he wasn't going to show that to reedfisher. he was going to soilder on and prove how strong he was becoming. he felt bad that he was getting tired because he was having so much fun training. 'before you do anything stupid, think about how my position and any weak points that you can target. i'm in a defensive position right now, and i could either throw you off of me or try to claw at your stomach. so try to defend yourself while attacking me.'
emberpaw took one more deep breath while he listened to his mentor. this was so interesting to him, and he was fasincated. he watched reedfisher's gaze stalk over to midnighthowl and maplepaw. his fur prickled subtly when he saw the black she-cat, and he watch reedfisher's fur do the same. emberpaw knew they both agreed without saying anything that there was something off about midnighthowl. and emberpaw had no idea why he would feel so scared of a clanmate. but meeting her gaze made him want to dart out of the training place.
'don't think too much before you act - just do what feels right,' reedfisher's voice broke the uncomfortable silence, and emberpaw turned his eyes to meet reedfisher's. he nodded as he took in his mentors words. 'just do what feels right...ok!' and in one swift moment he darted forward, raising his paws with claws sheathed. if all went well we would gently be able to swat at reedfisher's head, and then he would move in the correct motions to defend himself in any way possible.

Emberpaw puffed out his chest, trying to catch his breath at the same time, and Reedfisher felt an inkling of pride in his heart. This apprentice of his was so strong and brave and everything he had hoped he would be. Reedfisher only hoped that he could be as good of a mentor as Emberpaw was being an apprentice.
"and, go!" Reedfisher meowed to Emberpaw, awaiting an attack. His eyes were fixed on Emberpaw's, trying to spot any hint at his next move. But none came. Impressed, Reedfisher sheathed his claws, preparing for the attack.
It came suddenly, quicker than before, and the tabby tom felt himself caught off guard a bit. Still stunned, he watched as Emberpaw darted in, paws up and ready to hit Reedfisher's head. Allowing one blow in, the large tom winced slightly, preparing himself for the contact, and when Emberpaw's fiery paws butted into his head, he stretched his own paws out and attempted to shove the apprentice away.
(sorry it took so long! again.)
