Shifteye traveled swifty through the marshy land every once in a while checking to see if Runepaw was still behind her. The came upon the Thunderpath which divided the ShadowClan territory from the rocky area in which Highstones was located. She stopped at the edge, waiting for Runepaw to catch up. The Thunderpath was somehting he needed to learn about.

Runepaw had smelled it a long ways back. He didn't want to speak up, but he didn't want to go near it, either. His mothers deathplace. The foul smell prick at his nose as well as his memory, and he couldnt stand to sit right next to his mentor. Instead, he stopped a couple of feet behind her and kept his head up, trying to look like nothing was bothering him.

"Runepaw, listen carefully." Her tone was sharp and serious. "Thunderpath can be a very dangerous place. Many cats lose thier life being careless crossing, whether just being reckless or fleeing from somehting that seemed more of a threat." She knew, for at least one of her Clan before they were separated was killed crossing Thunderpath. "If you must cross, do it VERY carefully... Listen for monsters and look both ways before crossing. It takes an effort to force yourself across, especially if it's your first time." She looked behind her at Runepaw. "We best cross now, while it's safe." Shifteye could tell that her apprentice was frightened and she knew that probably the only way to get him across was to cross herself first and leave him alone. She listened and looked, and feeling no vibrations through her paws she dashed across the hard black surface quickly.

He cringed as she sprinted across. He stared after her, and then felt a strange shaking in his paws. Was he that scared? He then heard a far off rumble that quickly came close as a huge blue object zoomed past him, making him jump back and brace himself. His paws were shaking again, but this time it was from the scare of the monster, as Shifteye had said. He felt the rumble from the ground go and slowly crept up to the side of Thunderpath again. Follwing his mentors directions, he glaced both ways several times and started couting down from five in his head. But then at one, he didn't budge.
She called this hard? This was more like hell on earth for him. What if he got hit? He had watched and heard his own mother meet her fate. Another monster passed on the far side of the road, and this time, he forced himself not to move. No matter how fast these things went, they didn't seem to come off their track. He waited for the last monster to past, took two more glances and then ran, as he saw nothing.
The next few seconds went slow. Unbearably slow. The hard black rock beneath him was very hot, hotter than any rock he'd slept on. But the moment of truth came. He felt earth under his paws once more, and flew by his mentors body, coming to a stop a few feet away.

Shifteye mewed and purred encouragement. "You were great!" She said, purring loudly. "Would you like to rest here a bit to get over it?" She looked at the sky. She saw that if they hurried they might be able to get to Highstones before moonrise.

He shuddered and sat. His mind was filled with thoughts of his past, but he pushed them away. "No, I'll be ok. We can go on."

She nodded, but traveled slower than they had been traveling. She crossed into the rocky territory which surrounded Highstones.
