The rain shook the leaves on the bushes as Reedfisher stalked through the undergrowth, his dark tabby pelt heavy with moisture and even darker than usual. He didn't much like the way his fur hugged his muscular body, but it couldn't be helped. He had to train his apprentice sometime. And what better day than today?
He shook himself off when he reached the sycamore, his bright blue eyes scanning the cleared area where warriors and apprentices trained with each other. There was no one else there yet, and he smiled proudly. He had woken Emberpaw early that morning so they could get a jump start on the training, and later that afternoon he'd be able to talk to Foxtail again. His heartbeat quickened at the thought of her smile, and he laughed as he threw himself forward into a roll, his lanky frame tumbling across the clearing. Reedfisher landed on his back, smiling up at the sky as rain plummeted down around him. His laughter rang all throughout the clearing, and he cleared his throat before getting to his paws reluctantly. He didn't want to look dumb in front of his own apprentice.
"where is that furball?" he thought to himself, shaking water out of his ears. His claws dug into the ground as he flexed his legs, longing for a fake fight or a hunting patrol or something. It felt like he hadn't done anything in ages. Maybe he hadn't. He'd been too busy dreaming about Foxtail like a lovestruck apprentice. Chuckling to himself, Reedfisher settled down on the edge of the clearing, his eyes scanning the entrance to the sycamore. Surely Emberpaw would come soon.
[thought i should start it? so here we go.]

emberpaw felt weak sunlight sweeping into the den. moments before now, reedfisher had been in here gently waking him up. for a second, emberpaw had wished that he had not spent the entire night with lilypaw. but he decided not to think about that, he would spend a good day with reedfisher, and maybe even grow closer to him.
stupid marsh. emberpaw felt the moister seeping into his fur, and his hide started to twitch. his brilliant green eyes glanced around, and he sniffed the air. he was proud of himself that he was able to pick out his mentors scent, even though damp vegetation was mixed in with it. just as emberpaw wondered how much further the burnt sycamore was, he saw it.
feeling giddy with excitement, he bounded in the entrance. reedfisher was lying down and everything seemed quiet. 'uh...hello reedfisher.' the young tomcat shuffled his paws in the dirt and his fur felt hot. why did he feel so shy around this warrior? he mentally shook his head and waited for reedfisher to speak.

Approaching pawsteps alerted Reedfisher, and the lanky tom blinked his blue orbs and turned towards the entrance to the clearing. His nose told him nothing, thanks to the rainy, moist air, and he had to wait to see who it was. Thankfully, the sight of the orange tabby apprentice reached his eyes. He smiled, laughter crinkling his eyes.
"don't sound so formal," he meowed, gettting to his paws and shaking off his wet tabby pelt. "it makes me feel old," With an exaggerated sigh, Reedfisher examined his apprentice. He was sturdy, with a promising build. His eyes sparkled with a little too much excitement for the early hour, but that was all good. Smiling, Reedfisher took a few leisurely steps forward.
"so, as your mentor, i'm supposed to turn you into a strong, brilliant, brave warrior, yadda yadda yadda," His bright blue eyes shone in the hazy morning light. Reedfisher blinked, and without warning, shot forward, aiming for his apprentice's chest, hoping to knock him over onto his back, for a thrilling and exciting start to the lesson. He only hoped that Emberpaw would try to fight back, even a little, and not just flop over backwards with a little pitiful cry. His last apprentice had been like that. StarClan, Reedfisher rolled his eyes, focusing once more on Emberpaw. You ready?
[no problemo. i've been busy lately, too.]

'don't sound formal, it makes me feel old.' emberpaw relaxed a little as reedfisher got up and said these words. the tom with the fur the colour of autumn leaves sat down and let his tail wrap around his paws. he could tell reedfisher was examining him, he wasn't sure why, but he didn't say anything yet. 'so, as your mentor, i'm supposed to turn you into a strong, brilliant, brave warrior, yadda yadda yadda.'
emberpaw grinned and his eyes shown brightly. he was really beginning to think that he would come close to the tom. that's good, every mentor and apprentice grow a strong relationship, right? since he was lost in his thoughts he did not expect the tom to come crashing into him.
a small mew escaped from his maw as he was knocked over. at first he wanted to just lay on the floor and mew like a kit. but then he remembered that he was being trained to be a warrior. he knew that he was pinned, and with reedfishers size, he would have to think to get out of this one.
but, emberpaw didn't know much, so the best thing he could put together in his head was to kick the soft belly of his attacker. since he was smaller he would be able to move his back paws more and so, he kicked. of course, since this was practice he gently kicked the soft flesh and made sure his claws were kept locked. it wasn't his best acts of defense, but it was better than nothing.

Reedfisher felt his paws make contact with Emberpaw's shoulders, and the older tabby tom landed on top of his apprentice, blue eyes sparkling happily. This was what he lived for - the fun, the games, the learning, the joy of living. Emberpaw had let out a small meow of shock as his mentor came crashing on top of him, but now that he had gotten his breath back, the fiery red apprentice was fighting back.
It was all Reedfisher could do to stop himself from chuckling as his apprentice batted at his stomach with his hind legs, not yet laced with muscle as his were. The brown tabby smiled down at Emberpaw, sky blue eyes dancing, and stepped carefully off of him, flicking his tail as he did so. He had promise, this one. Full of energy and good humor. Just like Reedfisher.
"i think we're going to get along rather well," Reedfisher commented, pacing around the edge of the clearing, his eyes never leaving Emberpaw's green ones. "you remind me of myself," That was almost too true. Reedfisher had been a particularly difficult young cat, always running off or playing when he was supposed to be doing work. Of course, he hadn't been raised in a Clan, but nevertheless, he was quite a handful.
"so, what do you want to work on today? how to hunt, how to fight, how to catch the eye of a female apprentice?" Reedfisher smiled warmly at his own apprentice, raising one eyebrow. He was in such a good mood today, not even the rain could dampen his spirit.

emberpaw felt the weight of his mentor lift and he inhaled. he got up to his paws and shook the dust out of his fur. reedfisher's eyes, shining so brightly, only made him smile. 'i think we're going to get along rather well,' reedfisher began to pace around him, 'you remind me of myself,' emberpaw brimmed with delight, reedfisher was slowly becoming a fatherly figure in his eyes.
'so, what do you want to work on today? how to hunt, how to fight, how to catch the eye of a female apprentice?' after reedfisher finished his sentence, emberpaw turned shyly away, but a smile was plastered across his face. he had already caught the eye of a she-cat...but maybe he would tell reedfisher about that later.
the orange-red apprentice thought for a moment, and then after a quick moment he said, 'um...can we work on fighting? i know some hunting moves, but i don't know anything about fighting...' his voice trailed off and he looked up at his mentor. you know those moments when you just feel happy? when you just feel as if nothing in the entire universe could dampen your mood? well that's what happened to emberpaw right now. he just felt happy.
emberpaw quickly warmed up to the older tom. he felt comfortable enough with reedfisher to ask him a question, 'reedfisher...what is more important for the clan, learning how to fight to defend, or hunting to feed?' he was curious, both seemed very important, but which one was more important?

Emberpaw grinned brightly at Reedfisher, and the tabby tom felt pleased. He rather enjoyed the company of this younger tom, and he knew they would get along quite well. Finally, someone who looked up to him like a brother! Emberpaw blushed when Reedfisher spoke, and the tom saw a hint of amusement behind his green eyes. Hmm. Was it possible that he already had a female companion?
"fighting's important," Reedfisher meowed, after a moment's thought. "but it's rare. you'd probably be better off learning to hunt first, and then we can move on to more advanced fighting techniques." he smiled down at his apprentice, an idea forming in his clever mind. His blue eyes sparkled as he shook his dark tabby pelt, sending drops of rainwater flying in all directions.
"how about we have a little assessment?" Reedfisher got to his large paws and tilted his head sideways, examining the dark undergrowth. Why not? It would be difficult in the rain, but at least he would be able to see how much Emberpaw already knew. Any then they could come back and try some new moves together.
"why don't you head over to the thunderpath tunnel?" Reedfisher suggested, flicking his tail excitedly. He knew the area well, and he could watch Emberpaw from the cover of the brush. "don't get too close, but you can hunt in the area surrounding it." he smiled encouragingly at the tom before heading out, tapping him on the shoulder.
"good luck!" With that, his dark tabby form slid into the darkness and disappeared.
[i'll make a thread for them there. and yesh, i did enter them. so we'll get a head start!]
