Wake up Calls
Forgotten the taste and smell Of the world that she's left behind |
[/sub] Leaflight woke up early, not being able to sleep due to the fact of having an apprentice. It had been a few days after Jasperpaw became her apprentice and she hadn’t done much with him. Today she thought she might do some simple things, get to know him a little better. Tell him about training, though she was sure he had already asked his mother what he would learn. He was a bright kit, nice enough and very eager to learn. Like she had been when she was his age. Leaflight stretched and strolled over to the apprentices’ den.
She poked her head into the den and looked around for her apprentice. He wasn’t that hard to find he was one of the larger apprentices. “Jasperpaw, Wake up. I know it’s early but you need to wake up if you want to learn.” She hoped that she hadn’t waken any other apprentices, after all some of the members of StarClan hung above her. She padded into the den and nudged him in the side with her nose. After a moment she padded back out of the den and sat outside of it waiting for Jasperpaw.
For a second she felt like she was important. Now she realized that even though she had an apprentice, she was still going to be treated like Leaflight, the goofy she-cat, the forever kit at heart, the cat that could never be anything more than a pest. She shook her head from those thoughts, and thought about what she was going to do for training today … she hadn’t really planned anything, just attempting to get to know him, maybe they could collect moss for the elders. She was sure Jasperpaw wasn’t going to be too happy with Leaflight after waking him up early. When she was an apprentice, she hated waking up more than anything. She wiggled her nose and sighed. Her tail began to twitch uncomfortably. Leaflight heard movement from within the den. At that very moment she wanted to run over to High Rock and scream at the top of her lungs. When she was a kit that’s all she wanted to do.
Her sister was right. Leaflight was never going to be anything more than another kit for the clan to look after. She closed her eyes for a moment and blocked all noises off, let her mind relax and her all her senses leave her body. Leaflight was like a brick wall, someone would have to knock her over for her to come back from her happy place. Which seemed like an ongoing joke with many of her friends.

He was out of the nursery. Finally. The male stirred slightly in his small nest. It was uncomfortable and scratchier than the one in the nursery. It was great! It made sleeping comfortable a challenge! He adored challenges. Flopping over slightly, he felt Applepaw's fur bury into his nose. With a small sneeze, he opened his eyes. The sun wasn't quite up yet. But it was getting there. The apprentices' den was a somewhat unfriendly place. The younger ones were forced to sleep on the outskirts; flanks open to the elements. His family made a nest that kept them all huddled. They had a great bond. Jasperpaw's smile wavered as he thought of how that might all change. Training was different for each cat. Each mentor was different. They all taught similar things though, right? "I HOPE SO," he mused, eyebrows knitting closer. Maybe tonight they could have a piece of prey together and tell one another what they learned? His smile returned at the thought of seeing his siblings later tonight. "MIGHT HAVE TO LEARN SOMETHING TO TELL THEM FIRST," he thought, slowly getting to his paws. The energy was surging now. Jasper leaped from the apprentices' den. A smile was spread from ear to ear as he thought of his new name, rank, and life. The young cat was a warrior-in-training. The surname "-paw" made that fact clear to any warrior. Or rogue for that matter. It was a pretty day out, the feline noticed with a yawn. His large green eyes surveyed his surroundings. Leaflight was waiting for him. It wasn't as early as he expected the meeting to be, but the thought of his mentor waiting for him made him eager. He and Scoutpaw, his younger brother, were probably the only ones in a genuine mood. The younger orange and white tabby was trying hard to be tough for his sister. Jasper admired it, but he had the true courage and optimism the saddened siblings needed. He was always confident that he was better. Some call it rude; over-confident. The orange cat thought of it as hope and ambition. It was good to dream and set goals for yourself. His father had taught him that. As he plopped down next to the fresh-kill pile, he raised his head a bit. "MORNING DAD," he thought with a flick of his tail. The tall leader was watching him from StarClan. The sickness was over. he was in no more physical pain. The loss of his children and mate may have brought some mental pain, but Jasperpaw hoped not. The apprentice nabbed a small mouse. He wasn't really hungry yet, but he needed fuel. The training session started in the forest right after his meal. he scarfed down the kill, jumping to his paws. "I WONDER IF BRIARPAW AND THE OTHERS ARE OKAY," he whispered softly as he trotted over to his mentor. His brothers and sister started training today, too. Briarpaw was snappy and not his usual self the previous evening. Jasperpaw bit his lower lip. Applepaw didn't emerge until the very, very end. He jogged a bit slower now, the thoughts of the night before filling his head. Snowstorm had wanted to be his mentor. It was an honor. The femme was smart, cunning, and a a hell of a fighter. Or so he'd heard. Russetpaw was lucky. He wasn't very nice though. Neither was Fireclaw. The only reason Jasperpaw even know of her was because of her attitude problem. And the recent skirmish with two rogues. Hazelpelt had visited him and told him. Her face was still healing from the gashes. Jasperpaw winced at the recollection. It was a harsh life, but he'd been born to live it. And lead it. Sandstream, the queen who'd fostered them when Dawnheart returned to her position, had comforted Scout the previous night. She was the mentor to one of his brothers. After his name, he'd dashed over to Leaflight. He hadn't even heard. He might want to ask later. Jasperpaw was glad she was there. In all honest, the tom wasn't sure how he'd hold up to seeing his brother sad. Again. They'd snuck off - big surprise - together one day after the death and did all the sad stuff. Crying, grieving, story-telling. It was touching and pulled at his heartstrings, but he made it though. Once. He was reluctant to try and do it again. He was attempting to be positive. All the negativity was wearing him down. He prayed that his mentor wasn't too shaken by the recent death and was ready to get him working. He snuck around the back side of camp. As he did so, he tried to keep quiet. He suck in and held a breath to keep himself on his toes. The massive height and paws inherited by Emberstar were not coopering with the gesture. The apprentice was cracking twigs, branches, and shrubbery without even trying. A scowl replaced to smile as he attempted to ambush the she-cat. Leaflight was smart. She knew that he knew how to sneak around camp. The tommy had snuck out of camp with his siblings numerous times. His father did nothing to punish them for it, and for that Jasper was glad. It allowed the male to really see what was out there. He and Dawnheart were always close by. Even Jasper made sure of that. He would not have run into any unnecessary trouble without protection. He could've taken them, though - whatever "they" were. he slowed to a stop when a scent seemed to smack him in the muzzle. This was a well-used trail for apprentices and mentors to head to the Sandy Hollow. The stale scents of some of the apprentice he'd slept with the night before came first. Then some of their mentors who he knew. Snowstorm was one. His mother another. But his father's scent was still here. Very masked and marked over, but it was there. Jasperpaw remembered why. He'd snuck out and met with Dawnheart and Briarflight. And he'd followed this trail to get there. Emberstar mustn't traveled this way to see them. His heart surged and gave a weak thump. "I'M FOLLOWING IN YOUR PAWPRINTS DAD, YOU JUST WATCH," he purred, inhaling strongly. He'd come up behind the apprentices' den. Leaflight was still sitting there! His eyes brightened and he gave himself a few licks. He had to look presentable. Sandstream an his mother would be horrified if he arrived scruffy. Jasperpaw gave a small giggle and sprang from the surroundings foliage. "GOOD MORNING LEAFLIGHT! WHERE ARE WE GOING TODAY? WHAT ARE WE LEARNING TODAY? HOW TO COLLECT MOSS? HOW TO ATTACK AN ENEMY? HOW TO HUNT? HOW TO --" He was bombarding the female with questions. Slapping his tail down against the ground in nervous frustration, he cleared his throat. He made sure the smile didn't fade as he apologized, "GAH, I'M SORRY. IT'S HARD TO BE CALM IN A SITUATION LIKE THIS! I'M SO EXCITED ABOUT BECOMING AN APPRENTICE." His statement ended in a purr as he anxiously awaited the day's events. His mind drifted to other things as he waited for the small cat to answer him. A particular thought entered his cranium and he blurted, "MY DAD TAUGHT ME THIS. "LITTLE TOMMY," HE SAID, "YOU HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO STALK A MOUSE CORRECTLY. CAUSE IT'LL HEAR YOU BEFORE IT SMELLS YOU."" Jasper straightened up, the spitting image of former leader Emberstar, and grinned. Did Leaflight have a mother or father that was deceased? Were they close? Jasperpaw doubted anyone was closer than his sister and father. She was a definite daddy's girl. She'd probably sulk in the nursery if she could. But she was an apprentice now. They all were. Their job now wasn't to grieve, but to make their parents proud. Dawnstar would need brave, strong warrior in the future. Not ragged, depressed felines. It was okay to be sad. Jasper knew that, and he was sad his dad wasn't here, but he was happier to make him the most proud dad in the whole forest. "IT WAS SOMETHING LIKE THAT. BUT, YEP. HE CALLED ME "LITTLE TOMMY." A NICKNAME, IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN. BRIARPAW, SCOUTPAW, AND APPLEPAW ARE ALL CALLED BRIAR, SCOUT, AND APPLE. IT'S NOT LIKE FORGET OUR NAMES, IT'S JUST EASIER LIKE THAT, YA KNOW?" Hmm, there he went again! It was a good thing she was a younger warrior. Maybe her energy matched his. And she was just as nervous and talkative. He hoped so. He surveyed her over for a minute. She was tiny and lean. Her paws were petite. She had a pretty figure and face. His concern was that she'd never done this before. And she wouldn't know where to star. He grinned and spoke. Again. "MOMMA SAID YOU WERE KNEW AT THIS. AND I'M NEW AT IT , TOO! ER, ANYWAYS, I'M JUST SAYING THAT WE'RE DOING THIS TOGETHER FOR THE FIRST TIME. AND I'LL HELP ANY WAY WAY POSSIBLE. BESIDES BEING THE BEST STUDENT EVER. I CAN, UH, MAKE SUGGESTIONS? BUT IT SEEMS I'VE ALREADY DONE THAT." He shut his mouth and drew his gaze to the ground. He was being way too chatty. Probably freaking her out. Oh well. If she'd never heard of her confidence, she'd know it now. Jasperpaw was definitely full of it. Confident, happy-go-lucky, competitive. Him in a nutshell, definitely. He dipped his head apologetically and flicked an dear ear for her to talk now.. "NOT ANOTHER WORD, JAS." He scolded himself, tail curling around his paws.

Wake up Calls
Forgotten the taste and smell Of the world that she's left behind |
[/sub] Leaflight sensed the young apprentice at her side, but she kept her eyes closed and let him ramble on. She let a few smiles come across her face. Her tail was twitching happily, she was just nervous as he was, but he just kept on talking. Leaflight opened her eyes and looked at the happy tom as her reminisced about his father. She knew how hard it was to lose a father. Jasperpaw was lucky that he still had a mother and siblings that loved him. She on the other paw did not. Sure she may have some close friends like the new medicine cat, Faddedstorm, but her sister wasn’t one that enjoyed Leaflight’s company. She had lost her Mother, Father, Mentor, and Sister. Her sister had been a lost cause for a while, Her Mother died in battle and so had her Father and Mentor. All which was a sore spot, but she would have to handle it like she had before. After he had stopped himself from rambling on and on she spoke. “You remind me of myself when I was an apprentice.” Her eyes held the past within them.
Back when she was younger, she wasn’t the best student as she would share with him today. She would tell him all of the stupid things she did and some of the things she still did. Tell him the do’s and don’ts, but today was a day to get to know each other and he seemed very excited for it, all though he had no idea what was coming his way. Leaflight’s eyes grew wide with joy and happiness. “We won’t do much today, but don’t worry we will in due time.” She stood up and wondered what today was going to be like. She really wondered. What Jasperpaw going to not like her by the end of it? Was Leaflight not going to like him?
She blinked and looked at the fresh-kill pile. Nothing really drew her in, nothing really made her want to eat. Her stomach was filled with butterflies. She looked back at Jasperpaw and smiled. She continued to walk to the entrance, or the exit, of the camp. “Today we will just hang out, get to know each other. We might get some moss for the elders.” She said walking through the tunnel of the camp. It was comforting to know that the forest was always there for her to hide in when things got too hard to handle. Leaflight lifted her head to the waking sun; she could barely see it through the branches that covered her head, but it was there. She wasn’t even sure if Jasperpaw was following her, but she assumed he was. For a second she felt like a real mentor. The way she carried herself reminded her of Lilacfeather. The way Lilacfeather walked was how she walked that minute; her even voice was how Lilacfeather had spoken.
What the voice portrayed was not how Leaflight felt. Leaflight wanted to run and jump up and down and yowl at the top of her lungs, but she tried to stay cool. Jasperpaw obviously loved his father and looked much like him as well. “I know what it’s like to lose someone close to you.” She said with her voice cracking in the mid-sentence. She knew that no matter what she did they would always be above her, watching her attentively like they always had. Leaflight let her paws take her where they wanted. Leaflight opened her mouth to taste to sweet air of the forest. She lightly let each paw drop to the ground below and as she walked, from the look of it, to sunning rocks. It had to be her favourite place in all of ThunderClan’s territory. The Sun always shone there, it was near the river in which she enjoyed swimming. It was perfect and she was going to share it with Jasperpaw. If he ever needed her and she wasn’t at the Camp or on a patrol, this is where she’d be. All curled up on top of the rocks looking down at the shining waters of the River. It was one of her happy places.

PINK - THOUGHTS BIEGE - SPEECH
The apprentice averted his eyes from the dirt and rose his head a bit to see her face. She was smiling. A good sign, he hoped. And her tail seemed to be content with flitted to and fro. The pretty tortoiseshell closed her eyes and Jasperpaw's gaze immediately flicked back to the ground. Goodness, he'd made a mockery of himself. And his father. And mother. And siblings! All by being such a rude, inconsiderate-. Her eyes opened. The warm green orbs fluttered open. He realized the topic of family might not be the best to discuss. He gave a sigh. It was bad enough he talked too much. Now he brought up one of the more touchier subjects as far as Clan news went. He was happy his father wasn't feeling ill anymore. Happy he was free from the pain. Was it wrong to feel that way? yes, the forest had lost one of the best leaders ever, but that didn't mean all was going downhill. Emberstar would guide Dawnstar from StarClan. As would Reedmist and Cloverpelt. The medicine cats influenced her decisions and gave her hints just as much as her former mate would. “YOU REMIND ME OF MYSELF WHEN I WAS AN APPRENTICE.” She commented quietly, her eyes distant. She was looking at him but seeing something completely different. His straightened up as much as possible, watching his shadow stretch with his body. The male grinned at his massive height. It was all genetics. "YEAH, BUT YOU CAN'T BEAT ME. I'M GOING TO BE SO MUCH BETTER THAN ANYONE EVER IMAGINED!" And he had the best of them all. He wasn't tiny like Scout. Or visually impaired like Briar. And he sure wasn't squeamish like Apple. He was perfect. A bit over-confident, but an all-around great cat. He perked his ears forward when his mentor's eyes widened. She looked like a kit again. And spoke with such a happiness it made the orange feline's paw's itch with anticipation. "WE WON'T DO MUCH TODAY, BUT DON'T WORRY. WE WILL IN DUE TIME." At first hearing this statement, the cat's ears twitched uncomfortably. Not learning anything? What would he tell Briarpaw and the others? Applepaw was probably learning stuff today. Legitimate stuff. Not - Well, what were they doing today? "TODAY, WE WILL JUST HANG OUT. GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER." She meowed, staring over at the fresh-kill pile for a moment. Jasper gave a nod, but had she seen him? Would today be as exciting as he expected? With a twitch of his whiskers, he thought of Russetpaw curled up in his nest. He was so lucky to have Snowstorm. The pale feline would probably set Jasperpaw straight away up for battle training. Or hunting. Something about her seemed far too guarded to share personal information with one so young. But what would his mentor say? What could this young warrior possibly have been trough? He thought back to Hazelpelt. She was young. And very uncoordinated. But she'd done quite a lot for her age. Leaflight looked back at him and he snapped back to reality to pay attention. "ALRIGHT, THAT SOUNDS FUN." He meowed, grinning. Maybe it would be. Doing his first set of apprentice duties. Maybe some of the elders would tell him a story. Like they did when he was younger. That would be fun, right? It didn't seem like Leaflight was taking him out of camp today. But she was probably tired. Being a warrior looked exhausted. And awesome. "WE MIGHT GET SOME MOSS FOR THE ELDERS." Her lean shape was edging away. Scrabbling to his paws, the young male scampered after her. He'd never actually used the tunnels before. He found other breaks in the nursery wall for sneaking out. But they were heading into the forest. Jasperpaw forgot she was with him for a moment and leaped ahead of her. He inhaled sharply and smelled his father. He gave a small laugh and bounced happily up and down. Maybe he could take a leaf home and place it in his nest? All scents faded, but he'd know that the leader walked there once. And he could explain that to Applepaw. It may make her feel better. "I KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE TO LOSE SOMEONE CLOSE TO YOU," the female sympathized, trotting along with a serene expression. Jasperpaw stared at her with furrowed brows. They were at Sunningrocks now and her voice had cracked with some deep emotion. Had someone she known drowned in the river? He clawed his way up the rocks and stared down into the crystal blue waters. Turning to stare at her once more, he slowly dipped a paw down. It was cool. And felt good with the temperature of the forest. She wasn't looking to keen on his actions and he draw back his limb. He curled his tail over his back and began playing amongst the rocks. Leaping and marking trees with his claws. He pounced at the blowing leaves and tried to remember the days when it was easy to be so carefree. Now he had to be the strong shoulder. At this very moment, he felt kit-like again. Like it was okay to have fun and play. The look on Leaflight's face caused him to halt. She'd known death and the hardships it took to live such a life. he dared to ask this question. "WHAT DO YOU MEAN?"

Wake up Calls
Forgotten the taste and smell Of the world that she's left behind |
[/sub] They had made their way to sunning rocks. Her favourite place, but she really wasn’t paying attention to Jasperpaw. She was deep in thought about her rough past. “What do you mean?” He asked her. He seemed interested in what was on her mind. As her heart jumped around her body and her mind was filled with many horrible memories that she could go into detail about, but knew it wasn’t something you share with a kit.
“Well,” She said after a long silence, “Both my Mother and Father are dead and so is my mentor. They all had been killed in battle. My sister is all I have now and even then…I feel alone.” She thought of her sister Coolwisp and how distant they had become. Leaflight sat down and neatly tucked her paws underneath her and let the morning first sun raises hit her back. “I saw my Mentor die before my eyes.” She whispered not wanting to scare Jasperpaw. “As for my Mother and Father…I miss them a great deal.” She looked out towards the water. “I always come here when I have time.” She smiled forgetting the past and trying to think about the future and stopping him from asking any questions he might have had. She smiled thinking of a better time in her past. “My sister and I had snuck out when we were just kits and we came here. She dared me to go for a swim and so I did.” She smiled over at him before continuing. “I wouldn’t say I swam very well or at all, because a RiverClan cat spotted us and thought that we were one of theirs and she came to save us, only to find out we were ThunderClan Kits.” She laughed with glee as she imagined two kits sitting near where she sat now. “My father and a search patrol found us. My mother was very worried, she told us never to do it again, but I did it anyway.” She smiled again.
Leaflight could taste the sweet damp air that the river gave off. It tickled her tongue. “Jasperpaw, have you ever wanted to go swimming?” She jumped up letting her fur stand on end. Now no cat would be out this early, but she still had to be cautious. She walked over to the river’s edge as she had done the day before and slid into the water. She was wet from the tip of her tail to the end of each whisker. She now stood up and the water drifted underneath her belly. The water was something of a comfort to her. She smiled at Jasperpaw. “I love this place because of all the wonderful memories it holds for me.”

He could detect the rapid beating of her heart speed up. It was quiet for a long period of time. During which Jasperpaw began to swat at some leaves and small beetles and things. She was going to tell him, wasn't she? Had she secretly not wanted him to ask? "WELL," she started. Jas snapped back his full attention toward her. Good, she was going to say something after all! "BOTH MY MOTHER AND FATHER ARE DEAD. AND SO IS MY MENTOR. THEY ALL HAD BEEN KILLED IN BATTLE. MY SISTER IS ALL I HAVE LEFT NOW, AND EVEN THEN... I FEEL ALONE." His jaw dropped and heart gave a twisted beat. He couldn't survive without his mother and siblings. He thought about just being with Applepaw. She was sweet and kind. All you could ever want in a sibling, but she was no Briarpaw. She wasn't willing to wrestle or play fight. Not very keen any sneaking out or breaking rules like Scout. And he couldn't bare to imagine what she would act like if her mother died now, too. The young orange male wouldn't be able to handle both of them dying at the same time. He stared at Leaflight. They hadn't bonded yet, but how would he react if he lost her? Even now? As he thought of his mentor, she took a seat and tucked her paws. The sunshine was stretching down to touch the rocks. He'd never felt them all heated up before. He bounded forward and clawed his way up. It wasn't warm enough quite yet, but he still made himself comfortable. He tucked his paws underneath him as she lay down. Tail wrapped neatly around his large frame. "I SAW MY MENTOR DIE RIGHT BEFORE MY EYES." She added quietly. The hopes that she hadn't intended for Jasperpaw to hear was evident, but he hadn't positioned himself too far away to not be able to pick it up. He hadn't even seen a true battle break out yet. Just the scars and wounds it inflicted. He shuddered as an image of a screeching Leaflight falling limp flashed in his mind. 'THAT'S TERRIBLE," he comforted, slinking up to her. He buried his nose in her fur and inhaled. She smelled like ThunderClan camp, very faintly of cherry blossoms. and the forest. "AS FOR MY MOTHER AND FATHER... I MISS THEM A GREAT DEAL." Her gaze flickered to the water. Did she know how to swim? Would she teach him? Or had her parents drowned in the river? He hoped not. It would truly be an experience if he could learn how to swim. "I ALWAYS COME HER WHEN I HAVE TIME." She was smiling now, which must have meant she liked it her. And it didn't cause her to grieve. He faced the river now, too. His large paws were kneading the forest floor; crunching leaves as he waited. "MY SISTER AND I HAD SNUCK OUT WHEN WE WERE JUST KITS AND WE CAME HERE. SHE CARED ME TO GO FOR A SWIM. AND SO I DID.“ She flashed him a smile and all he could do was smile back. She was just as adventurous as he was! Then again, he didn't really think that was possible. "I WOULDN'T SAY I SWAM VERY WELL. OR AT ALL. BECAUSE A RIVERCLAN CAT SPOTTED US AND THOUGHT THAT WE WERE ONE OF THEIRS AND SHE CAME TO SAVE US. ONLY TO FIND OUT WE WERE THUNDERCLAN KITS.“ The small tortie began to chuckle and Jasperpaw joined in. He'd never gotten caught out by anyone. Except his parents. But they were fine with it. A perk of being a hierarchy couple's son, no doubt. 'MY FATHER AND A SEARCH PATROL FOUND US. MY MOTHER WAS VERY WORRIED. SHE TOLD US NEVER TO DO IT AGAIN, BUT I DID IT ANYWAY.“ She cracked another smile and he did the same. Rebellious, too? They were a match made in mentor-apprentice heaven. A dream team. The two best pieces of prey in the pile. The two sharpest claws on the best warrior's toes. "JASPERPAW, HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO GO SWIMMING?" She asked him, inhaling a bit. He inhaled too, surprised at how clean the air was here. Not quite so musky like when they were deep in the trees. "OH, YES!" He squeaked, ambling slowly toward the water. He spoke as he moved forward, now willing to share his stories with her. It seemed like she wouldn't get mad if he let her know he'd sneaked out, too. Plenty of times. He'd seen many of ThunderClan's greatest landmarks with his family by his side. There was one story in particular that may strike her fancy. He grinned and began. "I'VE BEEN HERE ONCE. BUT MY DAD CAUGHT UP WITH ME. HE LET ME PLAY HERE WITH HIM, BUT WOULD'VE JUMPED OUT OF HIS FUR IF HE SAW ME HEADING TOO CLOSE TO THE WATER." He giggled and swatted at a leaf. She was walking beside him. But as he halted and waited for her tail to bar the way. Or her to shout out for him to stop, he heard no such wards. She simply strode in. She allowed the water to soak her fur and stood up. The current swished her thick belly fur around and she smiled at the male. "I LOVE THIS PLACE BECAUSE OF ALL THE WONDERFUL MEMORIES IT HOLDS FOR ME." He nodded his agreement. It was very pretty. And quite peaceful despite the talk of RiverClan patrols wanting to take it back again. He splashed into the water and purred. "HOW OFTEN DO YOU COME HERE?"

Wake up Calls
Forgotten the taste and smell Of the world that she's left behind |
[/sub] Leaflight watched the water rush at her. “How often do you come here?” The lean apprentice asked. She thought about the past few days, she had come the day before her leader and Jasperpaw’s father, had died, the day she became a mentor and she had come today. She let a laugh escape her lips. "All the time, whenever I am not on patrol or out hunting, I am here.” The wind was picking up and the wind carried the moist air towards them and began to dry her fur.
Leaflight looked up towards the sky then across to the RiverClan boarder. After a moment she looked at Jasperpaw before looking at her water covered paws. “What are you most excited to learn about?” She asked without looking at him, and the image of Lilacfeather rushed into her mind. Lilacfeather had been a demanding mentor, but a good mentor. Everything Leaflight had been taught, in some way or another, helped her. She, Leaflight, was very anxious to hear what Jasperpaw had to say. She smiled at the thought. He looked so pleased and joyful. She could tell that he was going to be a wonderful warrior someday. She padded into the shallower water and sat down. She began to let her mind wander. Her eyes drifted over the rolling water, and over onto the bank of RiverClan territory.
She thingyed her head to the side and really stared at the moving reeds. Moving reeds. She stood up and dashed out of the water. “Jasperpaw.” Leaflight whispered and motioned with her tail for him to follow. What could be moving in those reeds? She asked herself.Well, Let’s hope it isn’t a RiverClan cat. Leaflight placed herself within the foliage on their side of the river. She could still see the reeds moving, so Leaflight pressed herself to the ground. The reeds broke apart and see saw a lean Cat step out alone. Now what would a single RiverClan cat be doing here?

I’M TALKING
YOU’RE TALKINGONE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTJasperpaw was smiling, his tail swimming of its own accord in the water. The young cat glanced further out into the river, expecting to see various fish and water voles. Then it struck him. It was getting very close to leafbare now. Most voles would go make nests on the banks. The apprentice narrowed his eyes. If the voles got out and resided on the banks did the RiverClan warriors live off of solely them? It hadn’t occurred to him that the sleek-furred cats would ever hunt land mammals. Perhaps, if RiverClanners could learn to chase down voles, Jasperpaw could learn to fish. Not now of course, but maybe he’d take a day out of his training to learn. It wouldn’t be stealing, right? He contemplated this while asking Leaflight how often she journey to this place. His thoughts busted by her laugh, the tom swiveled his head to face her. She was smiling and opened her mouth to respond. Jas grinned and sat patiently in the cool water. It would be great if he could come here every so often. Maybe, when the river froze over, he could glide across the ice. He flicked his gaze down to his large paws and grinned anew. He could picture him now; soaring down the river on all four paws and scooping up pesky water voles as he passed. “ALL THE TIME, WHENEVER I AM NOT ON PATROL OR OUT HUNTING, I AM HERE.” His mentor spoke so matter-of-factly. When he became a warrior, or even a senior apprentice, could Jasperpaw come and sit here, too? When he wasn’t busy of course. Leaflight could have the same mindset. Once the ginger tom became a ThunderClan warrior, would his former mentor want anything to do with him? Do mentors and apprentices loose that close bond that connects them together? He motioned he’d heard her with a splash of tail against the water. He let out a small laugh as the ripples disturbed the mirror image of things. He couldn’t escape the thought that he and Leaflight may not be good friends after his apprenticeship and decided to voice his concerns. It was what he was supposed to do, right? “HEY LEAFLIGHT. WHEN - WHEN I BECOME A WARRIOR, CAN WE STILL BE FRIENDS? I MEAN, IF I WANTED TO COME HERE WHEN I DIDN’T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO, AND YOU WERE HERE, COULD I STILL COME SIT WITH YOU? I HEARD FROM RUSSETPAW THAT AFTER HE BECOMES A WARRIOR, HE DOESN’T REALLY WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH SNOWSTORM OTHER THAN BEING A DENMATE AND FELLOW CLANMATE. COULD WE NOT DO THAT? OTHER THAN MY SIBLINGS, THERE AREN’T ANY APPRENTICES WHO LIKE ME VERY MUCH. I THINK IT’S CAUSE I’M GONNA BE THE LEADER. THEY’RE JEALOUS.” Now it was his turn to be matter-of-fact. He could always tell when someone didn’t like him. Jasperpaw was confident, what could he say? It didn’t really bother him that his current denmates weren’t appreciative of his optimism, but they could at least pretend. It was the kind thing to do. He had decided to make a pact with himself. He would ignore all the mean comments thrown his way and not be rude to a Clanmate. It was very unbecoming of a leader’s son and a future leader. The wind picked up and attempted to dry his sopping fur. He inhaled a deep breath as a tremor of cold met his pelt. “BRR,” he exclaimed, streaking from the water. It was freezing! Despite the good weather today, the breeze was the ominous future. That it was getting cold. And fast. Jasperpaw sent his mentor an apologetic look as he shook his fur to free it of the liquid. Leaflight switched her gaze from the sky, to RiverClan territory up ahead, to Jasperpaw, and back down to her paws. He gave a small smile. Was she upset? He hadn’t meant to hurt her feelings. He just got cold. It was very unlike a warrior to act with such cowardice. Taking another deep breath, he slipped into shallower water and allowed fluid to soak his forepaws once more. “WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED TO LEARN ABOUT?” She queried without a glance at him. His mouth drew into a hard line. His furrowed brow mirrored his thoughts; confused. It was all so exciting! Hunting, fighting, caring for the elders. He loved every bit of it! Except the prospect of aching paws. But even that made him happy. He’d get to take herbs and get to experience what they all did. He could never do that for his whole apprenticeship though. Herbs weren’t as fun as learning to attack an enemy. He’d been standing there for what felt like a moon trying to figure out what to say. There was so much he wanted to be skilled in. How could he possibly tell her in a few sentences? He could ramble, but that was rude. So, he simply flicked his ears and gave a shrug. “I’M EXCITED ABOUT EVERYTHING. I WANT TO GET INJURED, BUT NOT TOO BADLY, AND EXPERINENCE A WARRIOR’S PAIN. SO, I GUESS THAT MEANS BATTLE MOVES. I WANT TO LEARN SOME REALLY GOOD PATIENCE. I HOPE TO BE A DAD ONE DAY. UH, I WANT TO LEARN ALL THE HUNTING CROUCHES SO I CAN BE THE BEST HUNTER THAT THUNDERCLAN HAD EVER SEEN! SO, EVERYTHING BASICALLY.” He ended with a purr. He’d summed it all up quite nicely. Jasperpaw poked his chest out with pride. He stole a sideways glance at his mentor and was relived to find her smiling. He did the same and kinked his tail over his back. She approved of his goals in life. That was a good sign. He was comforted when she, too, padded into the shallower waters to join him. He gave another purr and stared over at the reeds. There was something moving there. With a glance at his mentor, the young cat took a few steps forward. Maybe he’d catch his first piece of prey! He narrowed his eyes and advanced toward the stalks, only to be halted by the sudden drop off into deeper liquid. Jasperpaw took a deep breath, expecting the scent of prey to hit him dead on. Instead, it was the scent of cat. He retreated a few steps just as Leaflight streaked from the water. “JASPERPAW,” she instructed, her eyes hard. The apprentice was frozen. Would this stranger attack him? His mentor swiped her tail across the air as a motion for him to follow. With a wary glance at the reeds, the tom strode onto the banks. Leaflight was no where to be seen. He drew in an anxious breath and caught her scent in the midst of the foliage. Giving a huff of relief, he dashed up to join her. The tom glanced over at the reeds. They had not yet parted. He mimicked the she-cat beside him and sank his belly fur into the ground. A few moments passed and the stalks finally opened. A lean cat stepped from them and surveyed the surroundings. A RiverClan warrior! Jas felt his heart pick up pace. With a rough whisper, he asked: “CAN’T WE INTRODUCE OURSELVES? OF INTERROGATE HIM? SOMETHING?” [/blockquote][/blockquote]

Wake up Calls
Forgotten the taste and smell Of the world that she's left behind |
[/sub] Leaflight narrowed her eyes at the RiverClan cat. “Can’t we introduce ourselves? Or interrogate him? Something?” Her new apprentice asked her. To her he seemed a little distressed. “We can’t do much. The warrior is on their side of the river, but we should get out of here before he knows we are here watching him.” She whispered thinking back to the times when RiverClan warriors found her in the river.
She stayed low, but turned around and started to head back to sunning rocks praying that the warrior wouldn’t see them. “Stay low and follow me.” She muttered as she dashed through the reeds. All Leaflight could smell was, river and it wasn’t calming at the moment. If felt like that Warrior was breathing down her neck, as if the warrior was racing after them. She guessed the way she was moving was going to grab the attention if the RiverClan cat, but they shouldn’t have been there in the first place. She could hear Jasperpaw behind her, but she could feel someone else too. It was as if as the RiverClan Cat had followed them. She slowed down and turned her head towards the river. Yes something was moving in the water.
“Don’t move Jasperpaw.” She whispered as water was splashed. The pounding of paws on the ground vibrated throughout the soft dirt. “Mouse dirt.” She muttered. “I should have known.” She shook her head in frustration with herself. What does that RiverClan cat want? She thought to herself. Jasperpaw, come on now we will interrogate him.” The She-cat said with a slight smile. “He is in our territory now.” She said standing up.
