Let's face it, the forest in the books is not only the home of all the Clans, but it is also a complex web of information, rumors, news, etc.I'm not saying everyone on here does this, but I have noticed it many times before, especially in the past, so I thought to myself Oh, why not? I'll just throw a note up. So that's what this is.I.
If you RP your character with another character for the first time, keep in mind that in the broad range of things, your character actually knows them. This is especially goes for if they are in the same Clan. However, it is safe to say something along the lines of "Whitepaw had spoken to Blackpaw in the past, but he had never really gotten the chance to get to know the other tom very well." As we all know, Clans are very close-knit communities. So, as I said before, if you have never RPed with that other character/RPer before, feel free to have your character recognize them, and immediately call them by name. After all, they are in the same Clan, no?
When it comes to cats meeting one another, and they are from different Clans, this same rule can apply, though with limits. It really comes down to what rank your character is. If your cat is a kit escaping from camp, and runs into an enemy warrior patrolling a border, they obviously won't recognize them. The same could possibly go for apprentices, though if they have been to a Gathering, that's a different story. In the books, apprentices almost greedily absorb information on the Who's Who? in the forest. So if you have an apprentice that runs into an enemy warrior on the border, it's up to you whether or not they recognize them.
A warrior, however, will almost always recognize other warriors from different Clans. It's their duty know their allies, and their rivals even better. However, a warrior identifying a young apprentice of a different Clan is unlikely. The apprentice has simply not really established themselves in the social ladder just yet.
Of course leaders, deputies and medicine cats will almost always be recognized, even by young apprentices. However, the exact opposite applies to rogues, loners and kittypets, for obvious reasons. They don't mingle at Gatherings, or sometimes in the forest at all. Thus, calling a rogue, for example, by name would be inappropriate. That is, of course, until they have told your character their name (if they even choose to do so at all!)
II.
Remember how I mentioned the forest is a whole web of information and rumors?
Though this rule would definitely apply to cats from the same Clan, it can also apply to those of different Clans as well, if appropriate and not obviously out of place. When RPing with a character that your cat has never encountered before (and they are of a different Clan), take a moment to locate their bio and quickly breeze through it (obviously, this does not apply to non-Clan cats). You might find an interesting tid-bit in their history that your character would learn through the rumor mill. Maybe they weren't Clan born, or they are related to a leader or deputy. Of course, if an element of their past is meant to be a secret, your character won't know about it. But if it seems like something that would easily get passed from one Clan to the next, it could turn into an interesting conversation element for you to use in your posts.
For example, in the WC vs RC battle going on right now, Greyfur taunted Rainleaf about her former apprentice, Featherpaw, who was killed under her watched seasons ago. Though they are from different Clans, this is obviously news that would have been passed along the grapevine. It added a new flavor to the fight for both characters, and was a good use of character information while RPing. So kudos to Greyfur for utilizing that! ; )
Well, that's it folks, and sorry it turned out to be so long. I just thought this might be a nice technique, for lack of a better word, to use in your RPing futures. =)
